Wikipedia Discussion while Visiting W3C

Software Development / software standardization

Wikimania is this weekend and by chance I happened to meet Joseph Reagle on the way back from lunch yesterday with Philippe LeHegaret and Steve Bratt. Joseph used to work at W3C with Steve and Philippe and they were kind enough to introduce me.

12:01 Blues Band

music / Software Development

Jane and I went to see the 12:01 Blues Band at the Acton Jazz Cafe last Saturday night. It was a great night out. Both cafe and band were very enjoyable. As I mentioned before, Jane and I lived in Chicago just after college (1978-1982, can it really be that long ago?!?) One of the great things about living there then, and living where we did (in the DePaul neighborhood on the near North side), was...

Book Signing in Beijing

books and publications / Software Development

By sheer chance my visit to China last week coincided with the release of Chinese edition of our SOA book. The publisher was kind enough to invite me to a book signing ceremony, which involved a 30-minute lecture, an hour or so interview, and a Q&A session with the audience before any actual signing occurred.

New Book Review

books and publications / Software Development

Gunnar Peterson posted a review of the SOA book I wrote with Greg Lomow, and also put it on the book's Amazon page. Thanks, Gunnar! I hear from many people privately about the book, and that's always great, of course, but I really appreciate it when someone takes the trouble to post a public comment or review.

Chicago Piano

music / Software Development

A couple of weeks ago I was in Chicago for the Eclipse Board meeting. Afterward i went with one of my friends to see Barrelhouse Chuck "and friends" at Rosa's Lounge. It was great. Rosa herself was behind the bar, and Barrelhouse's friends included Pete Crawford, Katherine Davis, and Eiko, who took over on piano while Chuck sang a couple of songs.

Nice

Software Development / telecom industry

Today I'm in Nice at the TeleManagement World (TMW). I used to attend these events 10-12 years ago, when I was at Digital. Some things haven't changed - Keith Willets is still talking about the importance of back office standards in the context of telecom industry transformation, and the operators are still talking about new and better services, such as mobile TV.

Well I'm still in Zurich today, which is great. Two nights - soon to be three - in the same hotel room is welcome change. Today I went up to the top of Mt. Rigi and hiked around a bit before coming back down.

Munich

miscellaneous / Software Development

Ok, today I am in Zurich but yesterday I was in Munich so I will report on that. Not much to say except we had a great visit with a senior SOA architect at O2. I can say a couple of things - they are definitely interested in SOA, and one of the interesting aspects the architect mentioned is the benefit of SOA in the context of standardizing IT terminology across projects and departments.
